BKS Volunteer Info and Parents Meeting Reminder!
Hello again, everyone! We’ve finally got some beautiful weather again, and since we’re only three weeks out from the first practice(!), we wanted to touch base on a few things.
Parents Meeting
Just another reminder that the Parents Meeting will be at the BSCA Community Room on Saturday, May 16 at 6:30 pm. We will provide a season overview and tons of other information and will answer any questions you might have. Registration fees and volunteer checks will be collected at the meeting, as well.
Swimmers are invited to attend and enjoy some team building activities with Coaches Andrew, Charlie, Adrian, Thomas, and Claire. Coach Kelly will be speaking with the parents during the meeting. Erin St. Louis (mom of one of our swimmers, Oscar, as well as Coach Charlie) will be offering suit fittings at the meeting.
Juniors-only families...please don't feel obligated to attend the Parents Meeting, but it is a good opportunity to meet other families and pick up useful information on our team as a whole!
Volunteers
Volunteers are the backbone of swim meets and without volunteers we would not be able to hold meets for our swimmers. To give you an idea of the scale, it takes over 35 volunteers to host a home meet and 18 volunteers to support away meets. Most of these roles are timers and officials, and we rely on the help of our families to make these meets happen for our swimmers.
Need to know what positions we will be looking for? Check out the descriptions at https://burkestation.swimtopia.com/volunteer-positions.
Do you want a front-row seat to all of the action in the water? Please consider being an on-deck official! These positions require NVSL training in advance of the meets. The trainings are only 2 hours long and are required every other year; this year’s clinics begin May 16th (NVSL TRAINING SCHEDULE - CLICK HERE). No advanced registration is required.
You do not need any prior swimming knowledge to be an on-deck official. In fact, most of our most “tenured” parents had no experience with swimming before becoming officials. For your first assignment, we try to pair you with one of our experienced officials during a B Meet so you can get the lay of the land and have an experienced hand to guide you through the process.
Are you a current official and not sure if you require recertification this season? Check out the list at the bottom of the email. If you are looking to become a starter or referee, please make sure to read the requirements on the NVSL site. We require two stroke & turn judges for every meet, so even though it looks like we have plenty at the current time, people are not always available. Please consider volunteering as a stroke & turn judge this season to help make sure we’re covered for each meet.
Each family is asked to submit a $300 volunteer fee check before the season. WE DO NOT WANT TO CASH THAT CHECK. We would *much* rather have your help at meets than your money. We will provide more information on volunteering at the Parents Meeting.

Register Now!
If you haven’t already, please register ASAP so we have a better handle on the number of swimmers who will be at practices and other activities. The Coaches would also like to have a better idea on numbers for each practice as they begin to prepare for the season. No money is due now - pay at the Parents Meeting on Saturday, May 16. All swimmers registered by May 18 are guaranteed a size for the FREE team shirt.
If you know a family interested in joining us this season, please pass along our email address or direct them to our website. We have plenty of registration slots available and would love to welcome them to the team!
Let’s hope for some nice, hot weather over the next couple weeks to warm things up for opening weekend at the pool and for our first practices on May 26. We can’t wait to get started!!
- Deirdre, Mike, and Matt
