Junior Destroyers
The Burke Station swim team offers a learn-to-swim program called Junior Destroyers. The team is led by senior team members who are skilled swimmers and who we know are kind and patient with the littles.
Junior sessions are held in the shallow end of the pool. Instructors focus on water confidence and foundational skills, e.g., putting faces under the water, blowing bubbles/breath control, kicking, floating, and arm movement. We mix learning skills with toys and games to help continue progress in the water. Each session ends with a game of "What Time Is It, Mr. Fox" across the shallow end.
We strive to provide a 1:1 student to instructor ratio. Some of our newer instructors may be paired with a more experienced instructor.
Registration is capped at 15 swimmers due to space limitations.
Eligibility
Unlike some communities in the region, swimmers do not need to reside in Burke Station Square to be eligible to join Junior Destroyers. While participants must be members of the Burke Station Swim Club (BSSC) to participate, BSSC is an “open pool," meaning anyone can join (i.e., membership is not limited to families living in any specific neighborhood).
Junior Destroyers
5-week session: $125
- Weeks: June 23 – July 23
- Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
- Time: 8:45am – 9:15am
- Fee: $125
Age Requirement: Junior Destroyer swimmers must be at least 3 years old and comfortable leaving their parents to participate in the shallow end of the pool. While there is no age limit, most Junior swimmers age out of the program by 6 years old. We are happy to assess your swimmer prior to registration to determine if the Junior Destroyer program is a good fit.
Swim Meets
- The Lollipop Meet at the end of the season is designed for Juniors and 8 & Under swimmers. Races are fun *and* silly, but every swimmer gets a lollipop prize for each race, while winners receive a coveted Ring Pop!
- We also try to offer "deep-end dash" races for Junior Destroyers at home B Meets in which swimmers will compete in a kick board race with a Junior instructors.
