BKS Coaches Corner 2025 Spring Edition!

Hello Destroyer Community!

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to some, and to say hello to others :)

My name is Kelly Hanik and I am the Head Coach for the Burke Station Swim Team. This is my 4th year being a part of of the coaching staff, and I cannot wait for the start of the 2025 season! I am currently an Assistant Coach for the Fairfax Foxes PVS Club team and an active member in the USA Swimming community. I have 2 kids who swim with me year round, and shockingly do not mind being coached by mom…at least for now :)

This summer I am humbled and excited to be surrounded by an amazing group of assistant and junior coaches who are going to help lay the swimming foundation and support your swimmers in achieving their goals.

Andrew O’Kane: An OG to the BKS community, Andrew returns to us for his second year being an assistant coach, following his 1st year at Virginia Tech, where he was a part of the VA Tech marching band. Andrew is also the Head Lifeguard for the pool this summer.

Charlie St. Louis: New to the BKS community, Charlie comes to us with an extensive background in swimming and coaching. He is joining us this summer following his first year at American University, where he was a solid member of their Division 1 swimming program.

Adrian Curameng and Eric Rojas (current BKS swimmers), will be leading the show for our Transition and Junior Group Destroyers. This winter, Adrian and Eric used their amazing skills developing swimmers techniques and building/maintaining water endurance in the BKS Winter program. We are so excited that they will continue to help provide those developmental skills for our younger swimmers this summer.

The philosophy that you will see as a common theme from the coaches will be sportsmanship, self love, and self fulfillment.Even though we moved up to Division 13 this year, winning will never be the priority of the coaches. Our successes last year, and in years past, was a direct result of the team camaraderie, sportsmanship, hard work, and dedication from the swimmers (and their families- volunteering is SO important!). Our goal will always be to shake hands at the end of races and to have fun!

REGISTRATION is OPEN! If you have not already, please register your family! No payment is required at the time of registration, but this will help us get an idea for setting up the logistics for practices as we prepare for the season. Please share this email with anyone you may feel would want to be a part of our fun community!

I know the state of the world has been topsy turvy for some with a change in job environments and requirements. Please know, the coaches will work with families on a situational basis and can provided creative ways to further support you and your family if needed.

Looking forward to another season of memory making, losing my voice from cheering, meeting new families, and catching up with the old ones :)

Enjoy the weather!

Best,

Coach Kelly
